#23

I think this learning journey is just a beginning. Emeging technologies, including the one we have palyed, are vast and enormous and involve lifelong learning.

Having gone through 23 things, I just got the feeling of some of emerging technologies being used in some of the libraries.

The things that I leant from this journey: with blogs, wikis, podcasts and RSS, we can keep up and have an avenue to discuss things with colleages; we no longer need to depend on strictly regulated tools such as OPACs, AACR,LCSH. With new tools we need to learn skils such as how to register at a social software site, how to joing and cotribute to Blog(s), RSS, how to assess Open Source software, how to tweak template etc.

I am happy about playing with 23 things becuase, in the library, we need to try and assess many services to find what works for clients.

Yes, 23 things are useful and playful at the sametime they are time consuming.

I would like to joing in future discovery program like this.

#20 You Tube #21Podcasts #22 Audiobooks

I viewed YouTube some of the categories. I was looking for some sort of library induction, short video & could not find. I found so many interseting and useless videos. One of the intersting ones that I found was 'We are one'. The message is about unity/ humanity. It says we all have something common irrespective of many differences. We are one race sharing the world. I think this vedeo can be used in the library for Harmony day.

I dislike videos (so many) catered for cheap interests such as 'Pretty teenage tits'. One will have to filter through the myriad of videos to find something of value.

I think categaries such as People & Blogs, News & Business can be applied to library website; and also libraries can upload their own production, e.g. library week, story time, muti-cultural events etc.

#21 Podcasts
I tried Yahoo Podcasts & searched for library related ones & found 222 podcasts. I chose LibVibe: the library news podcasts. In addtion to very interesting episodes, I also found very strange ones too; e.g. 'Man found shot at library'; Spy camera upsets Tompkins County library employees.

I realised that podcasts are useful because they present us (and we also can present) what is happening around the world including the libraries.

#22 Audiobooks

I could not established a Netlibrary account; when I clicked on PLCMC, I got the message: "Page not found." Then I viewed Netlibrary's Demo on e-books & journals; later I read that a free account can be set up & looked for it and did not find. Then I viewed New eAudiobook collections-Feature Titles: 'Agnes og God {Audio Theatre Series} from home page and got the message: 'Internal Sever Error: ASP error".

In short without establinshing an account, I could not even get an abstract of a title that I am interested in.

#18 & #19 Web-based apps Discovering Web 2.0 tools

I tried Zoho using Zoho Sheet & Writer.

It is inresting to notice that one can use many options that MS Office application has used; eg. in the Sheet Summing, sorting (ascending/descending); inserting Rows/Colums, Bold; exporting to MS Excel (.xls)

In Writer I found that short cuts, do /undo as they are used in MS Word can be used. It found that Toggle HTML Source option is useful for those who are not familier with HTML codes etc.

In Summary, Zoho can be easily used by anyone who use MS Office applications.

I tried Social News tool Digg. I was impressed to see a news submitted a minute ago. It is interserting to note that Digg community can contibute news, videos, podcasts on any topic; coverage is limitless including technology, science, world & business sports, entertaining and gaming. News on Sports seemed to be US oriented; I could not find any on cricket (2nd test match played in UK at present) in the first 3 pages that I viewed.
This tools can be used in the library as news tool that encourage to present library community's news, views and comments.

#16 What's in a wiki

When I read some of the discovery resources and looked at some of the library wikis, I found that opportunity given to add subject guides is useful for clents who have research interests. Also found that the opportunity given clents to have their openions through 'Discussion" box, Books reviews etc. show that clients are important part of the library.

Ability have news relevant the organisation, topics of interest as seen on the web, tips on state of the art technology such as ten internet safety tips etc. encourage clients involvement and librarians' skills development in the tech age.

Week 6: Tagging... Technocrati Web 2.0 Lib 2.0

#13 Delicious bookmarking

It is interesting. You can have frequently used urls in delicious. When you tag using space, spaced terms occur individually. Whatever term clicked in, gets the site; eg. stock broker.

It seems to be useful tool for creating book marks that can be accessed from anywhere. And also using tags it can be a used as research tool.

#14 Technocrati

Did a search on 'learning 2.0' in Blog post, in tags and in the Blog Directory. Results were different. In Blogs 436 blogs about learning 2.0.; in blogs 'San Jose SLIS embraces Second life by Shamin occurred first; in tags it ooccurred 3rd and two more (latest) tags preceded it.

Popular Blogs: grouping [Top Favourite Blogs-Top Searches - Top Bolgs} is interesting & makes sense; however to go through them is mind-bogling.

#15 Web 2.0 and the future libraries

In the information age library users use the internet widely for varios needs. They expect to access what they need whenever they need (24/7)online; eg. e-books, ejournals, blogs, podcasts, service etc. Web users dislike physical barriers such as fix opening hours of services including the library. Library 2.0 gives opportunity the libraries to break the physical barriers and satisfy needs of the online community by giving them to participate in knowledge gathering and content creation by overcoming the 'You" the Library and "we" the patrons attitude. The Librarians need face technology challenges and should make use of them for participatory information sharing and facilitation.

#11 Library thing was down (13/06/07)& up again on 14th Jun.

I did add five book manually.
It is interesting to see that the Library Thing adds the book cover(s) right to the title; how many members & libraries have already go the book.

#13 Roll you own SE

Creating an account and search roll were easy to follow. I added five sites and noticed that it would be a useful tool in adding frequently used websites/urls for the clients.

Flickr#5

Tried #5 Discover Flickr.
Uploded a photo without tagging it. Then uploaded two more photos tagging them. Then tried to tag the 1st one using edit funtion; draggig it to the middle of the page was a fun. Also found that the slide show option was interesting.

I creating a card was bit tricky. Following the sceeen, I figured out to upload a photo from My Document folder.

Felt like that I am still a beating the bush around

Going to try Techonolgy part next.
